Magic is a good explanation for this kind of thing. Maybe he lost his legs and attached new ones this way? Maybe it was a price to pay for some arcane knowledge... or maybe that's just a side-effect of the type of magecraft he dabbles in?

Hmmm, yeah. I guess it's either- everyone sits and together creates their stories so each fit one another. [ Someone being someone's brother, friend, a comrade in arms. People who would make sense to work together

Or scratch that, and just go with whatever you want. The story can be about a bunch of strangers who were put together by fate. If someone makes trouble, it only makes the whole thing more interesting.
